Rangoli – 3rd concept for Swaabhi.
Swaabhi, our jewelry art studio has been continuously thriving on creating elegant designs inspired by India’s never-ending rich cultural heritage. While we were feeling sheer satisfaction from the launch of our first two successful design concepts – Parna and Spices, the third one which soon followed was ‘Rangoli’.
I still have a fresh memory of my childhood when my mother used to hold my hand tight and used to take me to one of Pune’s famous and buzzing market places named ‘Mandai’, just before the onset of Diwali season. While many of my friends used to get excited to buy Diwali crackers, I remember my eyes used to wait for that exhilarating sight of the Rangoli stalls. The market used to look nothing less than a pulsating color pallet. I still remember how my eyes used to sparkle at this view and how difficult it used to be to choose only a few Rangoli colors to bring home.
Being in a joint family might sound to be a tough deal at times, but if you look at it from another perspective, you get to learn so many skills from all the family members. One such skill which my aunt mastered was Rangoli. She had precise planning done every time she created a Rangoli. She used to first draft the design on a slate with chalk and once finalized bring it to life at the entrance of our home. I used to look at that entire process as if I used to watch a magician. I think my role was limited to doing tiny help to my aunt. Unfortunately, I could never pick up this skill from her well. Come to think of it, Rangoli as a theme for Swaabhi is probably my way of giving my best attempt to this beautiful tradition and I dedicate this theme to my aunt – Bhagyada Bhave.
Rangoli – The art of creating beautiful patterns on the floor or the ground using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand, or flower petals. The art which is native to India, Nepal, and Bangladesh is believed to have a lot of mythological importance and is even mentioned in Hindu epics. It’s believed that Rangoli used to be made at the door entrance to attract the Gods and ward off evil energies.
If you have grown up in India you are blessed to have experienced the perfect combination of variety and rich culture with a strong base of science. While Rangoli as a concept prevails all over India, different states have their own form of Rangoli and it’s mostly created on the occasion of Diwali. Design depictions also vary as they reflect traditions, folklore, and practices unique to the place. Let’s get to know different names of this art across India:

While there are different styles of Rangoli, the designs typically revolve around the representation of geometrical patterns. If you observe sand put on a metal plate and vibrate it at a certain frequency, geometric patterns start taking shape. This science is called ‘Cymatics’. The reason a Rangoli is drawn at the entrance of a house is because of its calming effect on a person who is about to enter. It manifests into vibrations (brainwaves) in the visitor’s mind putting him at ease and making him feel happy.
Other patterns also represent nature, folk, gods, and certain holy symbols. During Diwali, each day has its auspicious significance and the Rangoli symbolizes a design depicting the importance of the day.
Rangoli designs on different days of Diwali:
Vasubaras – This is the day when a cow is worshipped as a symbol of generosity and hence ‘Go padma’ – a design representing cow’s feet is made.
Dhanatrayodashi – Marks the first day of Diwali. A ‘ghada’ a metallic pot filled with gold coins, mango leaves, and coconut depicting prosperity and wealth, is made on this day.
Narka Chaturdashi – A Diya symbolizing the victory of good over evil aptly depicts the importance of this day when demon ‘Narkasura’ was killed by Lord Krishna
Lakshmipujan – A day to worship goddess Laxmi – goddess of wealth and fulfillment. A design of female feet representing her entry into the home is made on this day
The other scientifically driven forms of Rangoli that are made by Hindus include:
Swastika – This form is believed to drive negative energies out and enables the family and visitors to enter the house with positive energy.
Saraswati – A pattern that is a symbol of knowledge giving a message that a human mind should always be enlightened with wisdom.
Shankha – A conch shell of ritual and religious importance in Hinduism and Buddhism creating a sound that gives a message that there should always be the positive sound of life
Chakra – Chakra is a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy.
Om – The most sacred syllable in Hinduism, it is believed to be the manifesting word of God. The art of Rangoli happens to be an inseparable factor of celebrations and it is so enticing that no special training needs to be given for the generations to pick it up from their parents. Right from choosing the best design, the colors to be filled in the Rangoli, and then spending a few hours of sheer artistic pleasure to create it with family, Rangoli dyes every Diwali Festival in beautiful hues.
When I designed this unique jewelry theme, I was overwhelmed and astonished with the number of art forms I could derive which were inspired by Indian Rangoli art. A deep dive into various Indian art forms related to and associated with Rangoli designs helped me create some of the best designer pieces under Swaabhi’s theme-based jewelry collection. Each culture had a rich design and finally, I only picked the designs which carried some sort of relevance and importance in our culture.
Honestly, technically executing all the designs under the Rangoli theme, and crafting them into jewelry was not at all a cakewalk. Rangoli mostly has separate art shapes disconnected from each other so making a pendant/earring having concentric circles or squares or a ‘swastika’ in the center was just impossible. The real skill was to create these designs without compromising on the essence of the Rangoli traditional patterns, which I believe we have successfully managed to secure in all our masterpieces.
If you have keenly observed, one important aspect of Rangoli is its background which enhances the Rangoli patterns made on it. I created the designs for the Rangoli theme in such a way that they create outlines like Rangoli and the fabric of the costumes worn can act as a beautiful background to fill the transparency created by the gaps in between. To retain the delicate look of these patterns I used American diamonds and zircons.
